White paper released on using GIS to meet upcoming Distribution Integrity Management Program (DIMP) regulations

To follow up on a recent series of successful webinars by regarding the pending DIMP requirements, New Century Software has released a white paper titled, "Using GIS to Meet Upcoming Distribution Integrity Management Program (DIMP) Requirements"

Rich Arata, the Distribution Practice Manager at New Century Software, shares the experience he gained from working for fourteen years with Telvent Miner & Miner implementing asset management solutions and for Accenture Consulting managing GIS and asset management projects for PG&E and Sempra Energy.

The white paper discusses the following points:

  • Brief overview of the seven major components of DIMP
  • The role GIS will play in complying with those requirements
  • Key system attributes to include when creating or adjusting your data model
  • How to acquire the data that you don't already have
  • Spatial risk assessment using GIS data
  • Using risk valuation in the GIS
  • Ideas to monitor results and ensure continuous improvement
  • Five things your organization should be working on right now to get the most out of GIS

Facility Manager 2008 Now Available

New Century Software is proud to announce the release of Facility Manager 2008, an application designed to maintain pipeline attribute and centerline data stored in a PODS GIS.

By combining the functionality of its existing Route Manager and Facility Manager applications, the company has created a highly intuitive and flexible tool for pipeline operators to maintain accurate pipeline asset data.

A key advantage in Facility Manager 2008 is the ability for operators to modify their PODS data model without requiring a redeployment of their existing data maintenance application. Dynamic editing is designed to accommodate the evolving nature of an operator's data structure and to reduce application integration costs.

When maintaining pipeline assets in Facility Manager 2008, users can select between a graphical interface viewed in ArcMAP and a traditional tabular interface. The graphical interface helps users to visualize relationships between the data that might not stand out in a tabular format. Within the tabular interface, data can be arranged in multiple windows concurrently in either vertical (card) or horizontal (grid) views. A variety of filtering and sorting options can then be applied in order to locate data is quickly as possible.

Companies interested in viewing a demonstration of the application can email info@newcenturysoftware.com.

Release of SheetCutter 6.3 Includes the Ability to Produce Maps as a GeoPDF

With the release of version 6.3, SheetCutter is now integrated with the revolutionary TerraGo Publisher for ArcGIS. This connection allows pipeline operators to create a GeoPDF from alignment sheets built using SheetCutter that can be distributed to end users. A GeoPDF enables end users to turn layers on and off, zoom to a coordinate, measure distance and area, export files to Google Maps, and perform many other functions previously not possible within Adobe Acrobat and Reader. Other major advantages include a reduction of ArcMap licensing costs for basic users, less training time thanks to an intuitive interface, and an easier means of distributing maps across an organization.

Learn about data and application portability at the GITA Conference in Calgary

Join us at the GITA GIS for Oil & Gas Conference being held in Calgary for a presentation titled, “The Quest for Dark Matter and Data / Application Portability.” The session will be presented on Friday, November 7th, by Ron Brush of New Century Software.

Data portability is a fact of life for all GIS systems. It could be through a sale/acquisition of a pipeline system, a database upgrade, or data exchange with a vendor. In this presentation the group will look at more than a dozen factors that will either help or inhibit data portability. They will also explore more than a dozen criteria needed for application portability.

The GITA GIS for Oil & Gas Conference is running on November 6-7 at the Calgary Marriot Hotel.

Compliance Checker for PODS Data Model Implementations Released

The concept of “Level 1 Compliance” has been discussed for years among PODS users. It refers to the similarity between an organization’s current data model implementation with a specific version of PODS.

New Century Software has developed a free software for pipeline operators called “Compliance Checker.” The tool will review the tables in a company’s data model and generate a report of any discrepancies between that model and a number of PODS versions.

The client services team at New Century Software has released an online support call tracking system. The tool is designed to help improve the quality of customer support by improving response times, reducing resolution times, and increasing communication between support team members and the customer.

One of the most anticipated features in the online support center is a detailed knowledge database that clients can use to search for solutions to commonly asked questions. The self-service option is an excellent opportunity for clients who need support outside of the standard service times of 8AM – 5PM Mountain Time.

Clients interested in utilizing the new system can call (970) 267-2019 to request a user name and password.

Assessing the Risk of Water Distribution

New Century Software has been selected as a presenter at this year’s GIS in the Rockies conference being held in Loveland, CO. The conference is the premier venue for sharing geospatial information in one of the strongest GIS corridors in the United States.

The presentation selected was titled, “Assessing the Risk of Water Distribution: System Failures Using Spatial Risk Analysis.” Robin Magelky, Risk Engineer with New Century Software, will be presenting based on the following abstract:

The number of water utilities implementing asset management systems and GIS is growing, and large amounts of data are accumulating at these utilities. Managing this infrastructure and allocating resources when dealing with constrained budgets and aging infrastructure increases the importance of increasing the return on investment of expenditures. A risk analysis methodology is presented that can be used to evaluate the risks to the integrity of water distribution systems, increasing the return on investment for asset management and GIS data collection. The risk methodology is capable of incorporating diverse data sources to provide a quantitative analysis of the probability and consequences of a water line failure, including the impact of mitigation measures.

The method uses dynamic segmentation to incorporate information from linear events, such as pipe material, and geospatial data, such as soil type, into the risk model. In addition to evaluating the risk of water line breaks with regard to the assets of the water utility, the methodology can also incorporate the impact of releases to the surrounding area, whether that be due to overland flow, loss of service, or other consequences. This risk methodology can be used to guide investment in future inspections, pipe replacement, changes in security measures, and other mitigation activities to reduce the risk to the utility and community of a water main break.

An ArcGIS Server Application Released for Pipeline Data Sharing

Centerline Browser, an application designed to run on ArcGIS Server and share pipeline GIS data on the internet or within a corporate intranet, has been released.

New Century Software is proud to announce the release of Centerline Browser, an ArcGIS Server application that allows users to access pipeline data, alignment sheets, and reports using a secure internet or intranet connection.

Centerline Browser creates a system that distributes data to a broader base of employees. Users can quickly locate the information they need with a minimal amount of training. The application saves on ArcMap licensing expenses since it can be viewed in a standard internet browser.

Pipeline companies interested in learning more about the application can join New Century for a free online seminar on Wednesday, September 3rd, at 2:30 Central Time.

The seminars, being held in Houston on August 20-21 and in Tulsa on September 9-10, are designed to help oil and gas pipeline operators get the most of a PODS implementation within their organization.

User Conference scheduled for October 22-23 in Houston

What was the top request at this June’s User Conference held in Colorado? DO IT AGAIN!

New Century Software is pleased to announce that we will be hosting our second User Conference for 2008 in Houston on October 22nd and 23rd. The first event was a valuable way for our clients to network, exchange ideas, and give New Century great product feedback that will help shape our decisions for 2009. By bringing the event closer to home for most of our clients, we expect that a broader base of people will be able to attend.

DCP Midstream has graciously offered to host this event at their teaching facility near the Galleria in Houston. Visit the User Conference Webpage for more details.
